Robert E. Lee was a General of Confederate during America Civil War and has been marked as a hero in the South.
Robert E. Lee was born on January 19th, 1807 in Stafford, Virginia. His family was aristocracy which included a president, a chief justice of the U.S, and signers of the Declaration of Independence.
Lee treated himself as a greatness of his family. At his 18, he enrolled at West Point Military Academy, where built the fundamental of his legend in Confederate and he put serious mind to work. He finished his studies without a single drawback but with perfect scores in artillery, infantry and cavalry. Two years later, he married with Mary Custis, the great granddaughter of George Washington and had seven children: three sons and four daughter.
In 1846, Lee got a chance to go to the war with Mexio and server under General Winfield Scott and he distinguished himself as a brave and intellect commander and tactician. After the war, he was held up as a hero and was praised by General Winfield.
From 1852- 1855, Lee was the superintendent of West Point, and was the mentor of most of men who under his army and also who opposed him during the Civil War. In 1855, he took a position in cavalry and in 1859 he was summoned to suppress abolitionist John Brown.
In April 18th,1861, Lee refused the offer of commanding the Union force from President Abraham Lincoln and resigned from the military because he didn’t want to fight against his own people. However, when Virginia voted to separate itself from the nation on April 18th, 1861, Lee agreed to help Confederate force. In the next year, he became the command of North Virginia Army and beat back Union force in Seven Days Battle. In the August of that year, he led the Confederate to victory in the Second battle of Bull Run.
However, when he and his people tried to escape from the battle of Antietam, the bloodiest battle in Civil War, nearly 14000 of his men were captured, killed or wounded.
From July 1st to July 3rd, he and his army took rounds and rounds attack and suffer heavy casualties in Gettysburg, almost destroyed his entire army and this battle end Lee’s invasion to the North and this is also the turning point of the Union.
In the summer of 1864, Ulysses S. Grant became the new president and after Lincoln was assassinated. His army killed much of people in Richmond and Lee didn't have enough force to fight back so he had to abandon Richmond. The result of the war was clear. The Union defeat the Confederate. Lee surrendered to Grant.
